Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries, ranking 160th out of 182 countries on the Human Development Index. Progress towards reaching the Millennium Development Goal of eradicating extreme poverty has been limited. According to the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Report for 2009, about 74 per cent of the population still lives below the income poverty line of US$1.25 a day and 90 per cent below the US$2 a day threshold. The proportion of poor and ultra-poor is highest in rural areas of the southern and northern parts of the country. Read More...http://www.ruralpovertyportal.org/country/home/tags/malawi
Micronutrient deficiencies remain a serious problem in Malawi: the 2009 Micronutrient Deficiency Study found 48% of children under five and 25% of women of reproductive age were iron deficient, 40% of children under five and 30% of school-aged children were vitamin A deficient, and 11% of school-aged children had low urinary iodine levels. Although no recent data on zinc or folate deficiency exists, based on the high rates of stunting (40%) and reports of neural tube defects, it can be assumed both remain of serious concern.
We believe that the Herbal scones will be quite beneficial to the people who will be buying them. This was a trial, we haven't yet started going on the market as we don't have the capital to do that right now. The sale of Herbal scones would help all the single mother's who run the bakery at Repo Village make a living and support their families.
We are also planning on making moringa nutritional porridge to help feed the children at Repo Village. We need funds in order to buy maize meal. Once we have the maize we would supplement the meal with moringa powder made at Repo Village and making it into a very nutritional staple that would solve the problem of micronutrient deficiencies in our children.
